Tis’ the season! Here is a Christmas song my brother and I performed a loooong* time ago (Christmas eve 2008).
*Not as long ago as that picture suggests. But it is us.
I used my trusty Gretsch G5120 Electromatic in middle position to bring out the mellow.
I then ran it through my Boss RC-30 Loop Station. (Sadly, I no longer have this pedal as it was one of several pedals I had stolen in a home invasion spring of 2009). This is the only known recording of me using this pedal! Dun, dun, DUUUUNNN!!!
My brother added rhythm over the top with an acoustic Ovation to keep the drive throughout. This also added a sense of pace which was really needed in this live situation.
After hours of practice, and layers and layers of loops we were ready to go live.
One of the tough parts of playing with a loop pedal is that you can’t mess up, and if you do, you have to figure out how to cover for it. Another difficult part is getting the levels of each loop set. As you add layers things can get real murky so you have to be ready to adjust on the fly. The song itself is about 6 1/2 minutes and gave us ample avenues to make mistakes. Luckily, we got through it with minimal issues, and didn’t even use a metronome or ear monitors. (In hindsight I wish I had performed a full setup on the neck before performing so as to avoid some of the tuning issues we faced).
